Sure, any two movies about groups of the world’s greatest superheroes are going to look a little similar, especially when one of those movies was co-written and directed by Joss Whedon and the other was co-written and sort of directed by Joss Whedon. But watching Justice League last week, ScreenCrush video editor Ryan Arey was shocked to discover just how similar the DC Extended Universe’s first mega-team-up was to the climax of Phase One of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In the video above, he outlines all of the many ways they overlap.

Again, a certain superficial resemblance was inevitable. But the Justice League/Avengers parallels go way beyond that. Both movies have a bad guy from outer space with a big horned helmet. Both movies’ bad guys want to steal a cube with incredible cosmic powers. Both movies have characters who fought in World Wars but somehow managed to survive until present day. Both movies have heroes technologically modified by experimental surgeries that saved them from certain death. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Watch our video to see them all.
