There are more than twenty accidents every five minutes in Genesee County this morning, so here's a few tips on how to drive in our lovely state during the winter months.

1. SLOW THE HELL DOWN

You probably won't be able to drive the speed limit today, even if you're in a big truck with snow tires. Be respectful of those going slowly, because they're driving exactly how they should be.

2. LEAVE EXTRA SPACE TO HIT THE BRAKES

Guess what? Roads are slick. You're gonna slip & slide. We all know that the roads won't be plowed in a timely manner, so expect to hit the brakes earlier than normal.

3. SPEAKING OF BRAKING...

...TAP THE BREAKS. Slamming on them isn't gonna help anybody; you're gonna slide right into somebody's bumper.

4. CLEAR THE SNOW OFF YOUR CAR

It's actually against the law not to clear snow and ice off your car in Michigan, so take the extra few minutes, grab your scraper and get to it. We don't need to see your car speeding down the road in a cloud of snow as it blows off your windshield.

5. YOU HAVE A BIG OLE TRUCK? GOOD FOR YOU. YOU STILL NEED TO SLOW DOWN.

As the driver of a smaller car, I will gladly catch some flack for this, so complain away - I don't care if you have a gigantic truck with snow tires and chains. I don't. It's none of your business what kind of car I drive, or can afford. But I'm in a small car, and I drive slowly in the snow because it's the safe thing to do and I don't want to die. So if you're behind a small car in your big truck and you wanna go around us, that's fine.

6. ALLOW YOURSELF EXTRA TIME DURING YOUR COMMUTE

Trust me, I get it. My alarm goes off at 4:30 AM. Leaving early because of the snow just stinks. But I'd rather be at work a few minutes late than die on the way because I was pushing my luck.

GOOD LUCK THIS WINTER, MICHIGANDERS! May the force be with you!
