170 firefighters responded to the fire last night, which happened to be on Orthodox Easter.

The fire engulfed the historic building just hours after 700 people had attended Easter services earlier in the day. The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but officials think it may have been started by candles.

Luckily, nobody was in the building at the time and there were no injuries or fatalities. A church caretaker and three firefighters were treated for smoke inhalation. The Serbian Orthodox Cathedral of St. Sava was constructed in 1855 as an Episcopal church called Trinity Chapel. It has been Serbian Orthodox since the '40s.

Regardless of your religion, there's something so incredibly sad about seeing a church go up in flames.
