Guess Who Had Motown’s First Five #1 Hits
Smokey Robinson, The Four Tops, The Temptations, and the Supremes were known as Motown’s “Big Four”. But in the beginning, it turned out to be a surprise group who would get Motown’s first #1 hit. Got a guess who that might have been?
On December 11th, 1961 this trio from Motown Records topped the chart for the labels first #1 with “Please Mr. Postman”. Hailing from Inkster, Michigan, they began their career with a #1 hit. They would place another nine hits in the top 40, but never reach # 1 again. It was certainlty a surprise that they would clinch Motown’s first #1 single!
They were simply know as The Supremes when their chart dominance began. Of course they would later become Diana Ross & The Supremes. Their first #1 came in August of 1964, almost three years after the Marvelettes.
Their second straight #1 would also earn them their first gold record. But they aren’t done yet!
Another #1 from the album “Where Did Our Love Go”. , and their third straight #1
This is the 5th #1 single for Motown Records, but the Supremes would also add on another one and another gold record.
