In October, Amy Robach underwent an on-air mammogram to demonstrate the simplicity of the test, and to encourage viewers to do the same. It was the first exam for the Good Morning America correspondent, and Monday she and GMA anchor Robin Roberts revealed to viewers that Robach has been diagnosed with breast cancer. (Video below)

Robach, who was born in St. Joseph, Michigan, is scheduled to have a bilateral mastectomy on Thursday. (11/14) The 40-year old then plans to undergo reconstructive surgery.

What began as an on-air segment to promote breast health in October turned into a life-saving measure for Robach.

"The whole reason why I walked into that van was to raise awareness, for people to get mammograms, and little did I know that I would be a walking example of having a mammogram to save my life."
