A news conference was held yesterday, where Argentine Township Police Chief Dan Allen announced he is going to run for Genesee County Sheriff. He is going to challenge Sheriff Pickell, who's been at the post since 1999.

Allen's key focus will be the Genesee County jail's overcrowding issue and wants to work with local law enforcement, according to The Flint Journal. Here's what Allen had to say at the conference:

'"There’s a lot of talented law enforcement out there, and there’s not one person in possession of all the knowledge.'"

Allen believes crime would go down once the overcrowding issue is solved. He also had some more thoughts on the current sheriff's department:

'"We have different philosophies in leadership and different ideas in the direction we want to see the sheriff’s department go.'"

Sheriff Pickell's office hasn't commented yet on the upcoming challenge.

This topic actually came up the other day when Rod and I were at Tim Horton's. A couple of guys were talking about Chief Dan Allen and how he was planning to announce his run at the end of the week. The guys were huge supporters of Allen. Should be interesting to see what happens, or what Sheriff Pickell's office has to say.

It make sense that crime would go down if overcrowding in jails was resolved. In next week's election, there is a jail millage on the ballot and if it passes, funds would be used for operating the city jail. This could be huge for the city and Mayor Dayne Walling is urging residents to vote yes. This could be one solution for now.

What are your thoughts on Argentine Township Police Chief Dan Allen running for sheriff? Do you think he has a chance against Sheriff Pickell?
