Dave Bergman, whose bat helped the Detroit Tigers win the 1984 World Series, has died. Bergman had been battling cancer, and passed away Monday (2/2) at age 61. 1984 was Bergman's first year with the Tigers, and he remained with the team until 1992.

Bergman is often remembered for hitting a three-run homer on the 13th pitch when the Tigers faced Toronto on June 4, 1984. See the video below.

The Tigers released this statement after Bergman's passing:

"It is with heavy hearts we extend our condolences to the family of Dave Bergman. Dave was as spirited a person as he was a player. He will forever hold a special place in Tigers history for the versatile roles he played, and his significant contributions as a member of the 1984 World Champion Tigers. we will miss seeing 'Bergie' at the ballpark and in the community."
