The Promise Zone program will provide free college tuition to kids in Flint public, private and charter schools.

For the first year of the program, it will be funded by Detroit Pistons owner Tom Gores and Consumers Energy. Afterwards, money from the state education tax in the Flint area will fund it.

There are already Promise Zones in ten Michigan cities, and dropout rates have decreased in those areas. Results have shown that kids in these areas, when they know that college IS an affordable option, continue to apply themselves, instead of dropping out.

And yes, before everybody starts screaming about skilled trades, YES. Technical colleges are included in this.

LOVE this. We've always believed that education is a right, not a privilege for those who can afford it. Hopefully this will help the area!
