Kicking off this list is Memphis, Tennessee; with a population of 673,650, it has the sixth highest rate of violent crimes in the country which stands at 15.4 violent crimes per 1,000 people. Their rate of violent crimes has dropped 15% from 2009 and 2010. Memphis' mayor A C Wharton gives credit to Operation Safe Community which was developed in 2005. The program was developed with a number of strategies to help raise crime awareness.

In the number 4 spot is New Haven, Connecticut; even being the location of Ivy League Yale University, with a population of 124,856 and 15.8 violent crimes per 1,000 people it is one of the most violent citites on the east cost. The New Haven Police Department is considering placing cameras at the cities most dangerous intersections where a number of shootings happen, which has bumped the cities murders up by double.

St. Louis, Missouri sits in the number 3 position, although the rate of violet crimes have fell dramatically between 2009 and 2010 with the decrease starting in 2007, it still remains higher in violent crimes that any other of America's cities. St. Louis' population is 355,151 with a 17.5 violent crimes per 1,00 people it was rated number 1 with violent and non-violent crimes according to data from the FBI. This data also shows the murder rate for residents between the ages of 10-19 are the highest in the country.

No suprise for the number two spot, Detroit, Michigan. Detroit has always made lists relative to crime for many years. This can be contributed to the high unemployment rates, homelessness and the cities police inefficiencies even though the department went through some restructuring in 2005 after an investigation of the department. Detroit's population is 899,447 with 18.9 violent crimes per 1,000 people and a whopping 310 murders in 2010.

Now for Flint, the number of violent crimes has increased in all categories between 2009 and 2010, with the number of murders increasing notably from 36 to 53, moving the cities from seventh to second highest in the country. Aggravated assaults rose from 1,529 to 1,579 with a rate of 14.6 per 1,000 people. This places Flint in the number one spot for rate of assaults per capita.
