Flint Community Schools plan to lay off 55 teachers for the upcoming school year to balance the 2015-16 budget and continue shrinking the district's deficit.

According to ABC 12, the school board voted to table the move on Thursday when there were wrong names on the layoff list. Another issue was timing, with the layoffs effective on June 30th and insurance expiring the very next day. However, the layoffs, part of the district's Deficit Elimination Plan, are coming. Board Vice President Roneeka Pleasant-Brown says anything done "outside of that deficit elimination plan not only puts our district at risk of going deeper into a deficit, but it also gives the state permission to come in and snatch what we do have and put a halt to the progression that we're making."

The district deficit has gone down from almost $22 million last year to about $16.4 million currently. It's projected to drop under $14 million by the end of the next school year.
