Lawmakers are calling for stiffer penalties for those who commit crimes against people with disabilities.

Democratic state Rep. Bill Patmon of Ohio has introduced the bill, saying it was inspired by the fake ice bucket challenge, in which five Ohio teens were arrested after dumping urine, spit, tobacco, and water on an autistic 15-year-old classmate.

Under House Bill 648, adults who are convicted or plead guilty to a felony against someone who is disabled or older than 65 would spend two years in prison, along with any other punishment imposed by the court. Juvenile offenders would have to spend at least two years at a Department of Youth Services facility, according to this report.

Lawmakers say they are optimistic, but don't know if the bill will gain enough support to become law.
