Ernie can tell where they're hiding from the bubbles that surface on the water. Then he plunges his hands into the muddy bottom and feels for the snapper's tail. Sometimes he finds their beak.

Snappers aren't the only thing Ernie has had run-ins with. He says that he tries not to smile because he had his teeth knocked out by a chainsaw. I hate it when this happens.
