Brad Penny needed to have a good outing to pitch his way into consideration for being a part of the Tiger postseason rotation. Tonight's effort didn't help him at all. Penny gave up a leadoff homer to Alex Gordon and the Tigers were on the receiving end of a good old-fashioned butt-kicking by the pesky Kansas City Royals. Rookie first baseman Eric Hosmer was 5 for 5 with a 3-run homer (he has 4 in his last 3 games against Detroit and is 11 of 12 in those games). Maybe we ought to think about pitching around this guy.
The good news is that we only have to play the Royals one more time this season. Penny gave up 7 runs in just 4 innings of work and might find himself in the bullpen during the postseason. As bad as he's been lately, he will be fortunate to be on the postseason roster.
Max Scherzer will start tomorrow night's game at K.C. and will only pitch a few innings so Doug Fister can get some work in as manager Jim Leyland sets up his playoff rotation. Fister looks to be the Game 2 starter in the Divisional playoff. The Tigers will finish the regular season with 7 games at Comerica Park, 4 against Baltimore and then 3 with Cleveland.
