The day after clinching the American League Central Division title, the Tigers experienced a bit of a letdown. Gio Gonzalez outpitched Rick Porcello through the first seven innings, and left with a 3-1 lead. Both team's bullpens gave up a pair of runs in the late stages to make the final score 5-3.
After Phil Coke got the first two outs of the 8th inning, Ryan Perry was lit up for two runs on three hits and a walk to put the game out of reach for the Tigers. Detroit made a go of it in the 9th, Don Kelly drove in two with a double before Alex Avila and Austin Jackson struck out to end the game.
The Tigers and A's will wrap up their 4-game series tomorrow afternoon in Oakland with Detroit needing a win to split the series 2-2. Justin Verlander will go for his 24th victory against Oakland's Guillermo Moscoso, who is hoping for win #9. The Tigers will enjoy an off day on Monday before heading to Kansas City for two games. Then it's back home for the Tigers for the last 7 games of the regular season.
