Just last week 85 county jail inmates were transferred elsewhere at state expense, but Genesee County Sheriff Robert Pickell says the jail population is already teetering on capacity. There are 578 inmates as of today, just two below the jail's capacity. If the county goes over capacity again for seven straight days it will be forced to declare an overcrowding emergency, triggering a release of prisoners. There is some hope in sight though with a $1 million appropriation for the program included in a bill that has been approved by the Michigan House and Senate and could reach Gov. Snyder by the end of this week.
