Her name is Ernestene Shepard, aka Miss Ernie, and she began body building at the tender age of 71! According to the Guinness World Record, she is the world's oldest body builder, at the age of 75. Read Miss Ernie's story after the jump.
Today is National Running Day. Saturday you have another great reason to lace up the running shoes. It's the Race For Chase 5k, 10k and Kids run Saturday morning in Millington. I'll be running this one because this race means something more than just getting in some quick miles.
More than 700 cyclists will ride through southern Genesee County on June 28th. "Pedal Across Lower Michigan" will bike through Shiawasse, Genesee, and Oakland counties during a six day ride that begins on June 23rd.
As most of you already know, I'm a runner. It wasn't always that way. I started in my late 30's to lose the jelly roll that was forming around my midsection. My first running adventures were not pretty. Old people, pregnant women pushing strollers, and toddlers would routinely leave me in their dust at local 5k runs.
The Diplo-Dash Retread 5k run/walk is this Thursday, June 7th at the Flint YMCA at 411 E. Third Street. Both events start at 6:30 pm. It's a flat and fast course and makes for good speedwork for those training for the Crim. It also benefits the Diplomat Helping Hands Foundation, which assists low income patients in getting needed medications.
National Trail Day was yesterday, and I was out there with my wife Shelia and friend Jeff putting in some miles. Yesterday, we slipped through the mud in the Hogbacks, which is part of the Genesee County Parks system.
The American Cancer Society's Relay For Life hits the track at Davison High School beginning tomorrow at 10 am and lasting until 10 am Sunday. Teams and individuals have been raising money and will continue to do so at the relay. Silent auctions, t-shirt sales and other items will all go toward the fight against cancer.
The month of June means that school will soon be out, warm and pleasant weather and time for family vacations. June is also "Great Outdoors Month" established by Presidential proclamation.
