June 5, 2012 More than 700 cyclists will ride through southern Genesee County on June 28th. "Pedal Across Lower Michigan" will bike through Shiawasse, Genesee, and Oakland counties during a six day ride that begins on June 23rd.
As most of you already know, I'm a runner. It wasn't always that way. I started in my late 30's to lose the jelly roll that was forming around my midsection. My first running adventures were not pretty. Old people, pregnant women pushing strollers, and toddlers would routinely leave me in their dust at local 5k runs.
The Diplo-Dash Retread 5k run/walk is this Thursday, June 7th at the Flint YMCA at 411 E. Third Street. Both events start at 6:30 pm. It's a flat and fast course and makes for good speedwork for those training for the Crim. It also benefits the Diplomat Helping Hands Foundation, which assists low income patients in getting needed medications.
National Trail Day was yesterday, and I was out there with my wife Shelia and friend Jeff putting in some miles. Yesterday, we slipped through the mud in the Hogbacks, which is part of the Genesee County Parks system.

The American Cancer Society's Relay For Life hits the track at Davison High School beginning tomorrow at 10 am and lasting until 10 am Sunday. Teams and individuals have been raising money and will continue to do so at the relay. Silent auctions, t-shirt sales and other items will all go toward the fight against cancer.
The month of June means that school will soon be out, warm and pleasant weather and time for family vacations. June is also "Great Outdoors Month" established by Presidential proclamation. Living in Michigan, we are surrounded by forest, lakes and rivers. When was the last time you got out and enjoyed them?
Ever wondered how to get involved in BMX (bicycle moto cross) racing? Thursday, May 31st is your opportunity to introduce your kids to this exciting sport at the Richfield Park BMX track on Irish Road, just north of Coldwater Road.
Small town festivals and 5k road races just go together. The Swartz Creek Hometown Days Festival begins Thursday, May 31st and the Swartz Creek Challenge 5k is one of the opening events. The race will start and finish at Swartz Creek Middle School, 8230 E. Crapo St, Swartz Creek.
Some people wonder if they have made a difference in their lives. Blood donors don't have that problem. Every time you donate blood, you can save as many as three lives. Your donation is needed and it is meaningful. Summertime is a time when donations typically drop off, so you help is needed now.
