Seems as though every week or so we are having to dig a little deeper to fill our gas tanks. For the 4th time since the week before Christmas, the price of unleaded gasoline has spiked to a new high in Mid-Michigan. Most Flint-area stations are selling it for $3.69 a gallon now. Less than a month ago, we were able to buy gas for LESS than $3 a gallon. At this rate, it probably won't be long before we are having to cough up $4 for a gallon of petrol.

U.S. Coast Guard boats and helicopters are searching the Detroit River for a bridge worker who fell into the icy water early this afternoon on the Detroit side of the Ambassador Bridge. A Coast Guard spokesperson says the worker was seen by bridge security going under the water and not resurfacing. U.S. Coast Guard Unit Controller Patti Baca said that the Coast Guard was on scene quickly along with Detroit Police and Fire.

According to the Wall Street Journal, the company that makes Twinkies and Wonder Bread is preparing to file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection as early as this week. This would be the second time that Hostess Brands, Inc. has filed for bankruptcy in less than a decade.

Gas prices spiked in the Flint area just before Christmas. They took another jump just before the end of 2011. Less than a week into 2012, the price jumped again.

Unleaded gasoline could be had for less than 3 dollars a gallon in Flint a few days before Christmas. Now it's 3.59 just 3 weeks later.

Did demand/consumption bring about the price hike? Negative. Instability in the Middle East has caused speculators to jack up the price of crude oil and unleaded gas on the commodities markets.
