Flint Michigan resident and United States Marine Amir Hekmati has been ordered released by the Iranian Government after a deal was struck to release 4 American prisoners.

 

Amir Hekmati was arrested in Iran in 2011 while visiting his Grandmother, and was charged with being a spy working for the CIA. In 2012 he was sentenced to death by an Iranian court, the sentence was overturned and in 2015 he was convicted again and sentenced to 10 years in prison.

On May 11, 2015, the United States Senate by a bipartisan vote 90-0, called for Iran to immediately release Amir Hekmati.

Announced today Amir, along with 3 other American prisoners was released in exchange for 7 Iranian prisoners. One of the other men released is Washington Post reporter Jason Rezaian. The identity of the other two Americans remains unknown at this time.
