As Water Recedes, Some Major Detroit Freeways Remain Closed [VIDEOS]

As impressive at the rainfall totals were in Genesee County from the storms this past Monday, the greater Detroit area just to our southeast was slammed with the second wettest day in the city’s history.

While Flushing saw 4.70 inches of rain Monday, Warren got doused with an incredible 5.20 inches of the drink, and some spots in the Detroit area hit the six-inch mark, all of which contributed to an interstate stand still. Michigan State Police asked motorists to stay off all of the freeways in the Detroit area Monday night into Tuesday Morning.

The storm took the lives of three Michiganders.  A 100-year-old woman drowned in her Warren basement, a 68-year-old man perished after trying to push his car through the flood waters, and a 31-year-old woman suffered from a heart attack after her car was submerged in three feet of water.

As of this morning (8/13/2014), media outlets in the Detroit area report that stretches of I-75, I-696, I-94 and the Southfield Freeway remain closed.  Another round of showers and thunderstorms passed through the area yesterday adding to the flooding problems.  But there is no rain in the forecast until this weekend giving the Motor City a chance to dry out.
