The American Red Cross is urging the public to fall into the habit of year-round blood donation with their latest blood drive in Flint today.

Some stats about the need for blood:

  • Every two seconds, someone in the U.S. needs a blood transfusion.
  • Blood needs are constant for patients with cancer and other serious illnesses, victims of auto accidents, and infants born prematurely.
  • The average blood donor in the 65-county service area donates blood twice a year although many individuals can donate as often as every 65 days.

Todd Kulman, Communications Program Manager for the Great Lakes Regions, said they "need strong turnout from donors during the fall both to replenish blood supplies depleted during the summer vacation season and boost supplies before the upcoming holiday season."

Today's blood drive is being held from 12:00 p.m. until 4:45 p.m. at the Flint Blood Donation Center located at 1401 S. Grand Traverse.
