On Monday, we had the Humane Society of Genesee County on our show with Charlie the kitten for AJ's Animals. Four days later, he's part of our family.

I've been bugging Pat about getting a second cat for ages. Granted, we already have a mini-zoo: a dog, a cat, a fish, a snake and a bird. But, being the animal lover that I am, I really bonded with Charlie when he came in our studio on Monday. I did my best to convince Pat, with no success. So, I took matters into my own hands...and picked Charlie up on Tuesday.

Trust me, bringing home a surprise cat is a great way to start a fight with your husband. But I was willing to risk it to give this little dude a home, because I'm smitten with this kitten. The first day was a little rough; our dog Pepper really enjoyed his company, but our existing cat Rigby wasn't too happy. Some growling, a hiss or two. So we kept them separated. When I decided to let Charlie roam the house, I was concerned - was this going to work out? I knew it would take time, but I was still worried. After a bath and a nail trim, and he and Rigby started to coexist without fighting.

And now, at the end of the week, I caught them playing together in the basement. It sounded like two horses galloping through the house! Needless to say, I couldn't be happier with the new addition to our family. Pat, on the other hand, is still crabby. But I have no doubt that, as soon as Charlie snuggles up to him, he'll get over it.

Adopt, don't shop!
