"The amount of energy I expended keeping that secret and keeping this problem hidden from view was exhausting," Elizabeth Vargas told George Stephanopoulos as she talked about her alcoholism on Friday's 'Good Morning America'.

The 51-year old said she had been in denial for a long time, and was angry when her husband, singer Marc Cohn, confronted her about her drinking. Then she tried to make deals with herself.

"I started thinking 'Well, you know, I'll only drink, you know, on weekends,'" she added. "I'll only drink, you know, two glasses of wine a night. I won't drink on nights before I have to get up and do 'Good Morning America.' But those deals never work."

Vargas returns to work hosting the ABC news show '20/20' tonight. (1/24)
