New York City's ultimate night of glamour and haute couture takes place tonight, May 1, as the Metropolitan Museum of Art lights up for the annual Met Gala (technically called the Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute Benefit).

Celebrities like Katy Perry (one of the evening's hosts this year), Kim Kardashian, Selena Gomez, Kendall Jenner and more are expected to hit the red carpet in sartorial showstoppers inspired by renowned Comme des Garçons designer Rei Kawakubo, who is being honored tonight for her culture-shifting work in fashion.

Kawakubo, who founded the iconic Japanese label in 1969, is only the second living designer to be honored by the Met with a show. This year's exhibit is titled the "Art of the In-Between."

The 2016 Met Gala, Manus X Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology, was inspired by the intersection between technology and couture.
